The Baptism of the Holy Spirit Teaching

The Baptism With The Holy Spirit

Matt 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. NIV

John 7:37-39 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, _If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him._ 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. NIV

John 20:21-23 Again Jesus said, _Peace be with you_ As the Father has sent me, I am sending you._ 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, _Receive the Holy Spirit. NIV

Acts 1:4-5 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, He gave them this command: _Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit._ NIV

Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high._ NIV

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth._ NIV

The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. NIV

Joel 2:28-32 ‘And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. 32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls. NIV

Be Filled With The Holy Spirit

Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, _Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call._ NIV

Eph 5:16-18 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. NIV

Scriptural Examples

Salvation Experience

Acts 8:11-13 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. NIV

They Received the Baptism

Acts 8:14-17 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. NIV

Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, _Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?_ They answered, _No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit._ 3 So Paul asked, _Then what baptism did you receive?_ _John’s baptism,_ they replied. 4 Paul said, _John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus._ 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. NIV

Acts 10:44-46 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Why Do I Need the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?

Praying In Your Personal Prayer Language/Tongues Builds You Up

Jude 20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. NIV

When You Pray in Tongues Your Spirit is Praying Directly to God and You are uttering mysteries with your spirit

1 Cor 14:1-2 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

When You Pray in Tongues You Are Built Up/Edified

1 Cor 14:3-5 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. NIV (Corporate Worship setting)

Your spirit Prays

1 Cor 14:14-16 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. NIV

How Do I Receive the Holy Spirit

  1. You must be born-again (Romans 10:9-10)
  2. Remember Jesus is the Baptizer (Matthew 3:11; John 7:37-39)
  3. Just as salvation is a free gift – the baptism is a free gift
  4. Ask and Receive

Luke 11:11-13 Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.
